Free Showing: Sugarcane
The Maumee Environmental & Tree Advisory Commission will host a free community screening of Sugarcane, with a special Q&A on Thursday, January 29, at the Maumee Indoor Theater.
Sugarcane is the Sundance‑award-winning documentary that investigates unmarked graves at former Indian residential schools and follows Indigenous families seeking truth, justice, and healing. Following the screening, Special Guest Steve Livingston will lead an audience Q&A.
Livingston, a Monclova resident, serves as the elected Representative for District 1 of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, representing tribal citizens across 16 states. While Livingston’s ancestors did not attend the residential school featured in the film, members of his family were sent to U.S. boarding schools. They experienced cultural‑cleansing policies intended to suppress Native identity, language, and tradition. These government-supported systems caused deep and lasting harm across generations.
Today, Livingston is committed to raising awareness that Native communities are not only part of our shared history, but they are vibrant, diverse, and active members of federally recognized sovereign nations.
Whether you care about history, human rights, or powerful storytelling, the event offers a chance to learn and reflect on the power of the human spirit. We hope to see you there!
